They call it the War of the Roses. Yellow/Gold had been colors representing women's suffrage since 1867, and yellow flowers soon became regular symbols of the cause. In the days leading up to Tennessee's vote on the 19th Amendment, the people of Nashville began wearing yellow or red roses to signify whether they were for or against the vote.
